+ Originally designed as an invitation card to a party for a print technician - Linda Theophilus - leaving Gainsborough's House Printworkshop: (to pursue her own work in pin-hole photography and conceptual installation + to join her husband in India on various projects.)

In designing this image I included visual references to Linda: conceptual art and India = images from an exhibition De Sign - held in the Essex University gallery and curated by students on the University's 'Gallery Studies and Critical Curating' MA course. a-n magazine commissioned an article from me covering this exhibition. The images were from the video animation by Paul Schutze (inspired by the Jantar Mantar observatory gardens of Delhi) - The Garden of Instruments 2004 - (panning an architectural glass structure) which also included an Audio Art voice-over; an imagined conversation between India and Portugal in the c18th, 'referring to upgraded knowledge of celestial observations far superior to the Portuguese at this time'.

I have included some of the video imagery as texture on the prophet head; also another review for Marion Coutts at Firstsite, Colchester inspired me to the augury prophet idea + biblical and moon images included in earlier paintings.

Further references contributing to Augury Prophet and Moon include celestial eclipse forms from an Indian astronomer's site, digitised images of a Jantar c18th observatory, and negatives of shots showing a street in Coggeshall, Essex.

+ A colour work-out for a larger final commission (24 x 15 inches / 61 x 38 cms, acrylic on canvas), which is held in a private collection.

I was introduced to these two Springer Spaniels in a back of a Land Rover by the owner, who wanted me to get to know these 2 friendly dogs and paint their portraits in an imaginative way; as a double portrait! He also gave me a photograph as reference. After many sketches the image developed - partly as a hollowed-out labyrinth using 'Springer Spaniel' dog proportions.

+ A commissioned image of the two early cinema stars, requested in my style. I normally work from self detachment for designs, so this was quite difficult. I looked at videos, photos etc. until some ideas came e.g. Laurel has pulled Hardy's hat down so hard, that his hair is showing through the flipped up top!

Previously shown during 2002 in Florence, Italy at the Modigliani Centre as part of the Serious Pleasure exhibition (Royal Academy Schools Alumni Association - now RASA).

+ An image from the 'single head' series, where the forms have a visual thickness compared with later designs where a single edge denotes a thinner form. The eye shapes 'double up' with the spectacle forms which appear to be on the outside of a stereotype schoolboy cap. Bright abstracted colour scheme within graded thick and thin black lines against a white background.

A more subdued subtle abstracted colour scheme within graded black lines against a white background
